# Focus: what the research says

Published research on the two Focus quiz items comes from cells, animals and small human studies. Semax studies measured BDNF, a brain protein, in cells and rats, and the human studies are small, with no placebo-controlled trial in patients. CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin studies in small groups of healthy people measured growth hormone. None of these studies measured focus in people.

Concentration feels like a single thing, yet your brain assembles it from many moving parts: nerve cells firing, signals passing between regions, and proteins that keep those cells alive and connected. A laboratory study can usually watch only one of those parts at a time, in a dish, an animal or a small group of people.

Under the Focus goal, the quiz offers two answers, and one of them adds training. Those answers lead with two items, Semax and CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin. Each has its own guide: [does Semax work](/learn/semax/does-semax-work), [what CJC-1295 does](/learn/cjc-1295/what-does-cjc-1295-do) and [what ipamorelin is](/learn/ipamorelin/what-is-ipamorelin). This page gathers what those guides report, names the kind of study behind each finding, and gives no advice or directions.

## What research exists on Semax and the brain?

Research on Semax and the brain comes mostly from rats and cells. In a 2006 rat study in *Brain Research*, BDNF protein in the hippocampus, a part of the brain, rose up to 1.4-fold. BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) is a protein nerve cells use to survive and connect. The abstract gives no rat count. In people, two small brain-scan studies of healthy adults measured scan patterns, not thinking or health.

The same 2006 rat study found that TrkB, the receptor BDNF acts on, showed 1.6-fold more of a chemical switch that marks it as active. That is a careful look at one signalling step inside a rat brain. It is not a measure of how the rat behaved, and it does not establish a human result.

The human scan work is small. In a 2018 study in the *Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine*, 14 healthy adults had Semax and 10 had placebo, a dummy treatment. Scans showed a larger front part of the default mode network in the Semax group; that network is a set of brain regions that is active when you are not focused on a task. In a 2020 study in *Doklady Biological Sciences*, 52 healthy participants were scanned under Semax, another peptide or placebo, and the authors reported differences in connectivity between two brain regions. Both are scan measures, not health outcomes. [The Semax hub](/learn/semax) holds the full record.

## What research exists on CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin?

Research on CJC-1295 and ipamorelin measured growth hormone, not the brain. In two placebo-controlled trials of healthy adults aged 21 to 61, CJC-1295 with DAC raised growth hormone and IGF-I, a growth-related hormone, in the blood (Teichman et al., *Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism*, 2006). In a 1999 study of healthy men, growth hormone rose after ipamorelin (Gobburu et al., *Pharmaceutical Research*, 1999). Both studies measured hormone levels only.

Growth hormone leaves the pituitary gland in bursts, and two of your own signals help set them off. One is GHRH (growth hormone-releasing hormone), sent from the brain; CJC-1295 is a lab-made copy of part of it. The other is ghrelin, a hormone your stomach makes; ipamorelin is a laboratory peptide built to copy part of its signal. [The CJC-1295 hub](/learn/cjc-1295) traces the first signal in detail.

One quiz answer under Focus adds training, and CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin leads that answer. The pair's research record concerns hormone levels. No controlled human trial of the two together was found, and a 2026 narrative review in *Frontiers in Endocrinology* calls the controlled evidence for the pair limited. The catalogue blend uses CJC-1295 without DAC, while most human results concern the DAC form, so those results are background rather than direct evidence.

## What has research on the Focus quiz items not shown?

The studies behind the Focus quiz items do not show a change in focus in people, because none of them measured focus as an outcome. The Semax sources read include no placebo-controlled trial in patients. In July 2026, an FDA briefing document found the Semax evidence insufficient to support effectiveness for the three conditions it reviewed. No controlled human trial of CJC-1295 with ipamorelin was found.

The FDA's Semax review cited two references with limited design detail and small samples. It did not consider Russian-language references that lacked a full English version. A PubMed search on 14 October 2026 returned 232 records for Semax, and none was tagged as a systematic review or meta-analysis, a study that pools other studies.

Ipamorelin has one published trial of a clinical outcome. In 117 enrolled bowel-surgery patients (114 analysed), it found no statistically significant difference from placebo in time to first tolerated meal (Beck et al., *International Journal of Colorectal Disease*, 2014). One small trial cannot show that no difference exists. The FDA's August 2024 review found that ipamorelin is not a component of any FDA-approved drug.

## What kind of study stands behind each Focus quiz item?

Semax research is cell and rat studies plus small, mostly Russian human studies. CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin research is small human studies of hormone levels, alongside rat and pig studies (Raun et al., 1998). The kind of study sets what a result can show. A rat result does not establish a human result, and a hormone level is not a health outcome. The table below gives the study type for each item.

Think of the evidence as a ladder. Cells in a dish sit on the bottom rung, animals on the next, and small human studies above them. The top rung is a randomised, placebo-controlled trial in patients, where people are put into groups by chance and nobody knows who had which treatment. Semax research reaches the middle rungs. The one placebo-controlled patient trial of ipamorelin studied recovery after bowel surgery, not focus.

Approval status differs too. No FDA-approved drug contains Semax, according to the FDA's July 2026 briefing document. Research material is not a medicine and is not for human or animal use.

## Comparison

One row per Focus quiz item. The finding is the quiz's own line, and the study type names the kind of research behind it. Each row links the study guide and the catalogue listing. A cell, animal or small human result does not establish an outcome in any reader.

## Frequently asked questions

### What research exists for the Focus goal?

For the two Focus quiz items, published research covers cell, rat and small human studies. Semax studies measured BDNF, a brain protein, in cells and rats, and scan patterns in small groups of healthy adults. CJC-1295 and ipamorelin studies measured growth hormone. None of these studies measured focus in people.

### Has Semax been tested against placebo?

In the sources read, only in small brain-scan studies of healthy adults. In a 2018 study, 14 adults had Semax and 10 had placebo, and scans showed a larger front part of the default mode network in the Semax group. The sources read include no placebo-controlled trial in patients.

### Why does CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin appear under the Focus goal?

One of the two quiz answers under Focus adds training, and CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin leads that answer. The pair's research concerns growth hormone: CJC-1295 with DAC raised growth hormone and IGF-I in healthy adults (Teichman et al., 2006). No controlled human trial of the two together was found.

### Is Semax an approved medicine?

No FDA-approved drug contains Semax, according to the FDA's July 2026 briefing document. The ARTG, Australia's register of approved therapeutic goods, was not searched for the Semax guide.
