# ANP half-life: why it lasts minutes and how the body clears it

Updated 2026-10-16.

ANP lasts only a few minutes in the blood. A 2011 review in Critical Care reports a plasma half-life of about 3 minutes, and a 2022 review in Biology reports 2 to 4 minutes. Half-life is the time the blood level of a substance takes to fall by half. The body clears ANP quickly, using a receptor called NPR-C and an enzyme called neprilysin.

A hormone that works for minutes is a hormone built for quick changes. When your heart stretches, ANP rises, and when the stretch eases, the signal is gone almost as fast. Papers report a few numbers, and two clearance routes explain them. Both are set out here, and [our ANP hub](/learn/natriuretic-peptides) links the rest of the series.

This page also says plainly where a number is not known. Different reviews give different values for the same peptide. The medicine section has a checked label value for vosoritide. No primary label value was checked for carperitide or nesiritide.

## What is the half-life of ANP?

ANP's half-life in plasma, the liquid part of blood, is about 3 minutes in a 2011 review in Critical Care. A 2022 review in Biology gives 2 to 4 minutes for both ANP and CNP in human plasma. The two figures overlap. But neither review sets one value for every person or every setting. So this page lists each figure beside its source. It does not blend the figures into a new estimate. It also does not assume that both reviews describe the same experiment.

A half-life sums up a curve. It is not a timer. It tells how fast a level falls when nothing replaces the hormone. Think of a bathtub with the tap still running: while the atria keep stretching, they keep releasing new ANP. So the level in the blood depends on how fast ANP is released, as well as on its half-life.

The passages read give no separate half-life for people with heart failure, and this page does not estimate one. [The ANP guide](/learn/natriuretic-peptides/what-is-anp) covers what makes the heart release the hormone.

## How do the half-lives of BNP and CNP compare?

BNP lasts longer than ANP in the reviews read. CNP lasts about as long as ANP, or less. The 2011 review reports about 20 minutes for BNP. The 2022 review gives 12 minutes from one source and at least 20 minutes from another. For CNP, a 2019 review reports 2.6 minutes in plasma, and the 2022 review gives 2 to 4 minutes. These numbers come from different studies. They are not a direct, side-by-side measurement of the three hormones in one experiment.

BNP's longer life matters in practice. A 2019 review suggests that BNP and NT-proBNP are the first-line blood markers for heart failure partly because BNP has a longer half-life and more stability than the other natriuretic peptides. NT-proBNP is an inactive piece cut from BNP's precursor. The authors hedge their wording: they write that this may be due to the longer half-life.

[The ANP, BNP and CNP comparison](/learn/natriuretic-peptides/anp-vs-bnp-vs-cnp) sets the three side by side.

## How does the body clear ANP?

The body clears natriuretic peptides in two main ways. First, a clearance receptor called NPR-C grabs the peptide and takes it into the cell, where it is broken down. Second, an enzyme called neprilysin cuts the peptide apart. An enzyme is a protein that speeds up a chemical change. A 2019 review states that NPR-C is responsible for clearing natriuretic peptides. It adds that neprilysin breakdown happens when NPR-C is saturated, meaning full, like a car park with no spaces left. The 2022 review lists removal by the kidneys as a third part of the picture.

Neprilysin is found in many tissues. The Biology review lists the kidney, lung, brain, blood vessel lining and heart. It reports that neprilysin breaks down the human natriuretic peptides in this order: CNP first, then ANP, then BNP. In the figures above, BNP also lasts longest.

The same enzyme also cuts other signalling peptides, such as bradykinin, a peptide that widens blood vessels.

Natriuretic peptides leave the blood by binding the clearance receptor NPR-C, by being cut by the enzyme neprilysin, and by removal through the kidney. Source: Moyes and Hobbs, 2019; Forte et al., 2019; Nakagawa and Saito, 2022.

## Which clearance route matters more, NPR-C or neprilysin?

The balance between the two routes depends on the setting. A 2019 review reports that, in healthy people, NPR-C and neprilysin share the work of breaking down natriuretic peptides about equally. When peptide levels are high and NPR-C is full, neprilysin may do the larger share. The same review reports that the tissue matters too. For example, NPR-C takes up CNP more readily in the kidney than in the lungs. So the research gives no single answer that fits every tissue and every situation.

Medicine has paid attention to this. One class of drugs blocks neprilysin, and it has been combined with a second drug class to treat heart failure. The Biology review discusses the long-term effects of that pairing, called ARNI, in its abstract. Those trials are about a different drug class. They are not about giving natriuretic peptides.

[The ASCEND-HF guide](/learn/natriuretic-peptides/ascend-hf-nesiritide-trial) shows how long the nesiritide infusion, a slow drip into a vein, ran in that trial.

## What is the half-life of carperitide, nesiritide and vosoritide?

This page gives no half-life for carperitide or nesiritide, because no primary label value was checked for either medicine. Vosoritide is different. It is a CNP analogue, a laboratory-made molecule built to act like CNP. Its [FDA label](https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2024/214938s004lbl.pdf) reports a mean half-life of 21.0 to 27.9 minutes across 52 weeks, in 58 children aged 5 to 13 with achondroplasia, a genetic condition that affects bone growth. Those figures describe that study group only. They do not give a half-life for natural CNP, carperitide or nesiritide, and this page does not treat them as interchangeable.

The vosoritide figure describes children with one condition in one study. It cannot be carried over to other people or to other peptides. The label also does not compare it directly with the natural CNP value reported by Moyes and Hobbs.

A longer half-life is not a better one. It is a different property, and what a trial measures matters more, as [the medicines page](/learn/natriuretic-peptides/carperitide-nesiritide-and-vosoritide) shows.

## Comparison

Plasma half-life values for natriuretic peptides as reported in the cited reviews. Values come from different studies and are not a head-to-head measurement. The table records reported numbers, not a ranking.

| Peptide | Mitaka et al., 2011 | Nakagawa and Saito, 2022 | Moyes and Hobbs, 2019 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ANP | 3 minutes | 2 to 4 minutes | Not reported in the passage read |
| BNP | 20 minutes | 12 minutes, or at least 20 minutes in another source | Not reported in the passage read |
| CNP | Not reported in the passage read | 2 to 4 minutes | 2.6 minutes |

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does ANP last such a short time?

Two routes remove ANP fast. The clearance receptor NPR-C takes it up, and the enzyme neprilysin breaks it down. The kidneys also remove natriuretic peptides. A short life lets the level of ANP in the blood follow the heart's stretch signal closely.

### Does BNP last longer than ANP?

Yes, in the reviews read. The same 2011 review reports about 20 minutes for BNP and about 3 minutes for ANP.

### What is neprilysin?

Neprilysin is an enzyme fixed to cell membranes, the outer skin of cells. It is found in the kidney, lung, blood vessel lining, heart muscle, fat tissue and brain. It breaks down natriuretic peptides and two other signalling peptides, bradykinin and adrenomedullin.

### Is the half-life of ANP different in heart failure?

The reviews read for this page give no half-life for people with heart failure, so no value is stated here. One review notes that neprilysin may play a larger role when peptide levels are high.
