Selank was developed in Russia at the Institute of Molecular Genetics, Russian Academy of Sciences, as a synthetic analog of tuftsin. Tuftsin is a short immune-signalling peptide with the sequence TKPR; Selank keeps that four-amino-acid start and adds a Pro-Gly-Pro tail for stability, giving the seven-amino-acid sequence TKPRPGP.

The evidence base looks different from a Western drug-development programme. It includes Russian clinical literature in anxiety-related disorders, animal and cell work on GABA and monoamine systems, immune-marker papers on cytokines and inflammation genes, and biochemical enzyme studies.
