Why this molecule is studied

Why researchers study it.

The scaffolding inside a cell is built from a protein called actin. Pull it apart, rebuild it somewhere else, and the cell has moved. That is genuinely how a wound closes: cells crawl into the gap and rebuild it.

A protein the body makes, called thymosin beta-4, grips actin and is studied for its part in that rebuilding. TB-500 is a seven-amino-acid fragment copying the piece of thymosin beta-4 that does the gripping.

That distinction matters more here than on most pages. Thymosin beta-4 is 43 amino acids long; TB-500 is seven of them. Most of the well-known findings - wound repair, cell movement, new blood vessels - are about the full protein, not this fragment. The fragment's own record is thinner, there are no published human trials of it, and a 2024 study found the fragment alone did not raise wound-healing activity in a dish while one of its breakdown products did.

The actin-binding part

Actin is what a cell builds its internal scaffolding from, and taking that scaffolding apart and putting it back together is how a cell changes shape and moves. TB-500 copies the stretch of thymosin beta-4 that grips actin - written LKKTET. That grip is the mechanism everything else on this page hangs off.

Why that bears on repair

A wound closes partly because cells crawl into the gap and rebuild it. The idea under test is that making the scaffolding easier to rearrange helps them crawl. Studies also looked at whether fresh blood vessels follow them in. All of it in dishes and in rodents.

What the direct evidence covers

Thymosin beta-4 itself reached early human trials.
