Is Selank legal? Australian, FDA and Russian status
A search of Australia's October 2026 Poisons Standard (instrument F2026L01327) on 14 October 2026 found no individual entry for Selank, and a missing entry is neither approval nor permission. A search of openFDA's Drugs@FDA data for the active-ingredient name selank and a DailyMed search for the drug name selank found no FDA drug record for Selank, and a search of the eCFR found no US controlled-substance rule naming it (all 14 October 2026). Russia registers Selank nasal drops as a medicine, according to the product label reproduced on the RLS drug encyclopaedia (page changed 15 July 2025).
A molecule carries no passport. The same seven amino acids that a Russian drug encyclopaedia lists as nasal drops were not found in the openFDA and DailyMed searches conducted for this page on 14 October 2026, no individual Australian entry was found for them, and each country asks a different question about them. This page, part of the Selank hub, reads each record, names the day it was read and says what the record does not decide.
It reports documents and gives no legal advice. The Selank side-effects page covers safety records, and the Selank research guide covers the compound.

Is Selank legal in Australia?
Australian law does not name Selank in the search made for this page, which leaves its status to general rules. A search of the October 2026 Poisons Standard (Therapeutic Goods (Poisons Standard—October 2026) Instrument 2026, F2026L01327, dated 28 September 2026) found no entry for selank, tuftsin, TP-7 or its sequence on 14 October 2026, read on legislation.gov.au. The TGA says a peptide product that is a therapeutic good generally requires an ARTG entry or a specific exemption, approval or authority, that separate manufacturing and advertising requirements also apply, and that a 'research use only' label does not change whether a product is regulated as a therapeutic good (TGA, checked 14 October 2026). Australian law on peptides sets out the same exceptions. A missing entry is not permission.
The Poisons Standard sorts medicines and poisons into schedules, which are tiers of control. Australian law on peptides read the same instrument on 1 October 2026 and also found no individual entry for selank. It draws no conclusion about group headings, and neither does this page. Western Australia adds a state layer, set out in how the Poisons Standard reaches Western Australia.
Whether a product counts as a therapeutic good depends on what it contains, how it is promoted and what it is intended to do (TGA, Peptide products, updated 23 September 2026).
Evidence limits
What do these legal records not tell you?
These records do not say whether any person may lawfully possess, buy, sell or import Selank. The Poisons Standard search covers named entries, not group headings. The TGA's ARTG search tool was not queried for this page, so no ARTG status is stated. The WADA check covers the 2026 text only and does not apply the catch-all class S0. State and territory laws may add controls (TGA advisory, 13 April 2026). Every record was read on 14 October 2026, and a later edition or notice can differ. This page is a dated reading of public documents, not legal advice.
The United States and Russian records further down are not Australian law. They are included because people ask about them.
Is Selank approved by the TGA?
No TGA page read for this page names Selank. The TGA's examples of unapproved peptide products are BPC-157, GHK-Cu, TB-500, retatrutide and CJC-1295 (TGA advisory, 13 April 2026). The TGA calls goods that are not on the ARTG (the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods) 'unapproved' and says it has not assessed them for quality, safety or effectiveness (TGA, How we regulate therapeutic peptide products, checked 14 October 2026). Whether Selank appears on the ARTG was not checked in the register itself.
The TGA states that 'research use only' disclaimers do not change a product's regulatory status, permit importation or remove advertising or supply obligations (TGA advisory, 13 April 2026). A research label does not alter the records on this page, and the Selank reference material page describes research material, not a medicine. In a laboratory analysis of two suspicious preparations, Belgian analysts found Selank and Semax, and they built a method to detect ten such research peptides sold online; the finding shows presence in those two preparations and not how common they are (Vanhee et al., 2020).
Is Selank FDA approved?
No FDA approval record for Selank was found. A search of openFDA's Drugs@FDA data for the active-ingredient name selank returned 'No matches found', and DailyMed, the FDA's drug-label library, held no label for the drug name selank (both searched 14 October 2026). Semax returned no match in either source (openFDA; DailyMed). The FDA's briefing for its 23-24 July 2026 advisory committee describes semax as 'a registered drug in Russia' and weighs it only as a compounding bulk substance, and it sets aside a nominators' article on selank as 'out of the scope of this evaluation' (FDA briefing document, July 2026).
On the FDA's compounding page, 'Selank acetate (TP-7)' and 'Semax (heptapeptide)' sit in the same table of substances 'nominated but withdrawn', and both entries say the FDA lacks or has limited safety information (FDA, content current as of 22 April 2026). The Selank side-effects page quotes the Selank entry. A listing on that page is not an approval, and compounding is not the same as a registered product.
Why is Selank not FDA approved?
No FDA explanation was found in the sources searched for this page on 14 October 2026. The FDA says drug companies seeking to sell a drug in the United States must first test it, then send the agency evidence that it is safe and effective for its intended use (FDA, Development & Approval Process, checked 14 October 2026). The records searched show no approval, label or registered trial: Drugs@FDA and DailyMed hold no Selank record, and a ClinicalTrials.gov search for the term selank on 14 October 2026 returned only loosely matched records, none of which contains the word Selank. The FDA's compounding page adds that it 'lacks important information' on safety issues raised by selank acetate given to humans. A 2021 review calls Selank 'poorly studied' (Doyno and White, 2021).
Why no company has filed is not recorded in any source read for this page. A registration in Russia does not carry over to another country, so the Russian record below does not change the US position.
Is Selank a controlled substance in the United States?
The United States federal controlled-substance rules do not name Selank in the search made for this page. A search of the electronic Code of Federal Regulations for 'selank' returned no results on 14 October 2026, and a search for 'tuftsin' returned none (eCFR, Title 21 up to date as of 9 October 2026). The schedules sit in 21 CFR part 1308. Absence from the schedules does not settle how FDA drug rules treat Selank.
Is Selank approved in other countries?
Selank is registered in Russia as 0.15% nasal drops, according to the product label reproduced on the RLS drug encyclopaedia (page changed 15 July 2025). The label classes it under ATC code N05BX, 'other anxiolytics' (ATC is the World Health Organization's drug classification), and the label states it is dispensed without a prescription. A 2008 rat paper describes Selank as the working element of a drug that had 'completed the third phase of the clinical testing as a selective anxiolytic'; that is the paper's own description of earlier testing, not a result reported there (Sarkisova et al., Zhurnal Vysshei Nervnoi Deyatelnosti, 2008). A Russian registration does not carry over to any other country.
No record read for this page shows a registration in the European Union, the United Kingdom or Australia. That is a statement about the sources checked, not a search of every national register.
Is Selank banned in sport?
The WADA 2026 Prohibited List, in force from 1 January 2026, does not name Selank, Semax or tuftsin in the text searched on 14 October 2026. Its class S0 prohibits at all times any pharmacological substance not addressed elsewhere in the List that has no current approval by any governmental regulatory health authority for human therapeutic use. This page does not decide whether S0 reaches a substance registered in Russia.
Sport Integrity Australia says athletes are accountable for any prohibited substance in their system, no matter the source, and urges them to check substances through the Sport Integrity App (Sport Integrity Australia, 13 May 2026). The check here covers the 2026 text only.
Comparison
Each record checked for Selank, what it says and the day it was read. 'Not stated' means the record was not queried, not that Selank is absent from it. A record that names no entry for Selank is not an approval or a permission.

FAQ
Is Selank illegal in Australia?
No Australian record read calls Selank legal or illegal by name. The October 2026 Poisons Standard has no individual entry for it in the search of 14 October 2026, and the TGA says unapproved peptide products may be unlawful to import, supply or advertise (TGA, Peptide products, updated 23 September 2026).
Is Selank FDA approved?
No FDA approval record was found. Drugs@FDA data and DailyMed returned nothing for selank on 14 October 2026.
Is Semax and Selank FDA approved?
No FDA drug record was found for either in Drugs@FDA data or DailyMed (selank queries; semax queries at openFDA and DailyMed, all searched 14 October 2026). Both appear in the FDA's compounding table of substances 'nominated but withdrawn' (content current as of 22 April 2026).
Is Selank a controlled substance?
Not by name in the United States federal rules: the eCFR returned no result for selank on 14 October 2026. The Australian Poisons Standard search of the same date found no entry naming it either.
Is it legal to import Selank into Australia?
The TGA says unapproved peptide products cannot be imported or supplied in Australia unless a valid exemption, approval or authority applies, and that a 'research use only' label does not permit importation (TGA, checked 14 October 2026). This page does not decide any person's position.
Is Selank legal in the United States?
No federal controlled-substance entry naming it was found, and no FDA approval record was found. The FDA lists selank acetate among compounding substances 'nominated but withdrawn' and states that it lacks important safety information in humans (content current as of 22 April 2026).
