Why this molecule is studied

Why researchers study this pathway.

Start with what it copies. Deep in your brain, the hypothalamus releases a hormone called GHRH - growth-hormone-releasing hormone. Its whole job is to travel a short distance to the pituitary gland and tell it to release growth hormone. Tesamorelin is a synthetic copy of that message with a small chemical cap added, which stops it being broken down as fast as the natural version.

That is the entire mechanism, and it is worth being precise about: tesamorelin contains no growth hormone and supplies none. It acts on the switch that makes the body release its own.

Now the part that needs care. This same molecule is the active ingredient in Egrifta, an FDA-approved prescription medicine used for one specific condition - abnormal abdominal fat build-up in people with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. The trial figures quoted on this page come from those medical trials, in that patient group, under medical supervision. They belong to the medicine. They do not belong to the material on this page.

The switch

Your pituitary gland carries a receptor that listens for GHRH - the brain's 'release some growth hormone' message. Tesamorelin is studied as a molecule that fits that same receptor and presses the same switch.

Your own growth hormone

This is the part most often got wrong. Tesamorelin is not growth hormone and contains none. What the papers describe is a compound acting on the switch so the body releases its own - a meaningfully different thing from supplying the hormone itself.

IGF-1

Growth hormone does a lot of its work indirectly, by prompting the liver to make a second signal called IGF-1. Because IGF-1 is steadier and easier to measure than growth hormone itself, researchers track it as their readout of whether the pathway moved at all.
