Retatrutide in Australia: is it legal, approved or available yet?

Retatrutide is not approved in Australia or by the US FDA as of 14 October 2026. The TGA stated on 14 September 2026 that retatrutide 'is currently undergoing clinical trials in humans and has not been approved by the TGA or any comparable international regulator'. Eli Lilly plans its first US application for the first quarter of 2027 (Lilly press release, 29 September 2026), and no source checked gives an Australian approval date.

Form Labs materials are research reference materials, not the approved medicines; no Form Labs product is approved for human or veterinary use.

After a meal, your gut sends hormone messages up to your brain. Three of them are GLP-1, GIP and glucagon, and each one lands on its own receptor, a docking site on a cell. Retatrutide (LY3437943) is a lab-made peptide that Eli Lilly designed to reach all three docking sites at once (Coskun et al., Cell Metabolism, 2022), and the retatrutide research guide covers that science.

That design is why the name turns up in two very different places. It appears in trial news from Lilly, and it appears in online shops. This page, part of the retatrutide hub, keeps the two apart. It reads what regulators, the developer and trial registries say about legal status, approval and availability, and it dates every statement.

Is retatrutide approved anywhere yet?

No regulator has approved retatrutide as of 14 October 2026, according to the two records that address it most directly. The TGA stated on 14 September 2026 that retatrutide has not been approved by the TGA or any comparable international regulator. Eli Lilly describes retatrutide as investigational. Lilly says it plans to submit a Biologics License Application, the request a company files to ask the FDA to license a medicine, in the first quarter of 2027 (Lilly press release, 29 September 2026). Neither record gives an approval date.

Lilly's Phase 3 programme, called TRIUMPH, began in 2023 and had enrolled more than 5,800 participants by 29 September 2026, according to the sponsor (Lilly press release, 29 September 2026). A Phase 3 trial is a large, late-stage study. The earlier Phase 2 trial of 338 adults with obesity appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2023 (Jastreboff et al.). How long retatrutide has been studied lays out the full timeline.

Positive trial results are not an approval. A regulator reviews the whole data package, including how the medicine is made. On 23 July 2026 Lilly said it was still completing the Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls data package that the US application needs (Lilly press release, 23 July 2026).

Evidence limits

What can this page not tell you about retatrutide's legal status?

This page reads dated public records and gives no legal advice, so it cannot say what any person may lawfully do. It reports statements from the TGA, the FDA, Eli Lilly and ClinicalTrials.gov, all checked on 14 October 2026. It reports no statement from any other regulator, because none was opened. Lilly's plan for a first-quarter 2027 submission is a plan, and it may change. No source checked reports a TGA application for retatrutide. The Poisons Standard search covers one edition, October 2026.

A missing entry in a search is not proof that no rule applies. Scheduling under the Poisons Standard, approval by the TGA and state or territory law are three separate questions. The Australian law hub explains how to read each one.

Is retatrutide FDA approved?

Retatrutide is not FDA approved as of 14 October 2026. Eli Lilly says it plans to submit a Biologics License Application to the FDA in the first quarter of 2027 (Lilly press release, 29 September 2026). FDA warning letter 734884, dated 24 August 2026, lists 'Retatrutide' among products offered by an online seller and states that no approved application is in effect for them, so the FDA calls them unapproved new drugs. The letter is about that seller's products, not a ruling on Lilly's own programme.

The same letter takes up labels. It says that, despite product labels stating 'for research use only', evidence from the seller's website established that the products were intended to be drugs for human use (FDA warning letter 734884, 24 August 2026).

The US has one more record. Lilly's ClinicalTrials.gov entry NCT07629401, titled 'Pre-approval Expanded Access of Retatrutide', shows status 'Available' and was last updated on 6 August 2026 (checked 14 October 2026). It describes single-patient pre-approval access for adults with severe obesity and serious complications who cannot join a trial. It lists no Australian site, so it establishes nothing about access in Australia.

When will retatrutide be available in Australia?

No source checked gives an Australian availability date for retatrutide, and none says it will be approved in 2026. Eli Lilly says it is completing the manufacturing data package for a US application planned for the first quarter of 2027 (Lilly press release, 23 July 2026, repeated in the 29 September 2026 release). The TGA's legislative timeframe for a new medicine application is 255 working days, and its priority review pathway has a 150-working-day target (TGA, checked 14 October 2026). Those periods apply only once an application exists, and no source checked reports one for retatrutide.

Lilly said in its press release of 23 July 2026 that it now has 'the clinical data package to support global submissions' for obesity, knee osteoarthritis pain and obstructive sleep apnoea. That sentence is a statement about the data. It names no country and no date for any submission outside the US.

Three dated events set the pace. On 23 July 2026 Lilly reported topline results from two Phase 3 trials, TRIUMPH-2 and TRIUMPH-3. On 14 September 2026 the TGA issued its retatrutide safety alert. On 29 September 2026 Lilly presented detailed TRIUMPH-2 results at a European diabetes meeting, and the paper appeared in The Lancet (Bellido et al., 2026).

Approval and availability are also different facts, because an approved medicine still has to be supplied. How retatrutide differs from Mounjaro and Ozempic compares retatrutide's record with two approved medicines.

Is retatrutide available in Australia through clinical trials?

Retatrutide has been studied at Australian sites, but a trial listing is not a supply route. ClinicalTrials.gov, checked on 14 October 2026, returns 34 retatrutide records, and six name Australian sites. They include TRIUMPH-1 (NCT05929066), TRIUMPH-2 (NCT05929079) and TRIUMPH-3 (NCT05882045). Five of the six list Western Australian sites at Nedlands, Joondalup or Murdoch. Registry entries show where a trial ran and what its status was at the last update. Each record sets out who may take part under its own protocol, and this page is not an invitation to enrol.

Registry status differs by record. As of each record's last update, NCT05929066, NCT05929079, NCT05882045 and NCT05931367 (a trial in obesity with knee osteoarthritis) are completed. NCT06383390, a cardiovascular and kidney outcomes trial, is active but not recruiting. NCT07165028, a liver disease outcomes master protocol, is recruiting and lists Fiona Stanley Hospital at Murdoch.

TRIUMPH-2 ran at 92 medical and research centres and hospitals across eight countries and randomly assigned 1152 adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes (Bellido et al., The Lancet, 2026).

What has the TGA reported about retatrutide products sold online?

Four dated TGA records name retatrutide. On 13 April 2026 the TGA listed it among unapproved peptide product examples, and on 19 June 2026 the TGA and the Chief Medical Officer repeated that list. On 4 August 2026 the TGA executed search warrants in New South Wales and seized products that included retatrutide (TGA media release, 17 August 2026). On 14 September 2026 the TGA reported that laboratory testing of one product sold as retatrutide found undeclared semaglutide and no retatrutide, a finding about that single sample that does not show how common mislabelled products are (TGA safety alert, 14 September 2026). The four records are an advisory, a joint statement, a seizure and a laboratory test, each with its own date.

The 14 September 2026 alert followed one consumer's report of a serious adverse effect: uncontrollable vomiting that caused a torn oesophagus and needed hospital treatment, and a single report cannot show how common such events are (TGA safety alert, 14 September 2026). In the one sample the TGA obtained, held in its original unmarked vial, laboratory testing found semaglutide at about eight times the level found in semaglutide products assessed by the TGA and on the ARTG, a result for that sample only (TGA safety alert, 14 September 2026).

The alert describes one product and one report, so it cannot show how common mislabelled retatrutide is. This site's retatrutide reference material listing is a laboratory reference listing. It does not change anything the TGA has stated above, and it is not an approval or a claim of legality.

FAQ

Is retatrutide legal?

Retatrutide is an investigational molecule that Lilly says cannot be legally sold or marketed for human use (Lilly, 29 September 2026). The TGA and the FDA both treat retatrutide products sold outside trials as unapproved (TGA safety alert, 14 September 2026; FDA warning letter 734884, 24 August 2026).

Is retatrutide FDA approved?

No, as of 14 October 2026. Lilly plans to submit a Biologics License Application to the FDA in the first quarter of 2027 (Lilly press release, 29 September 2026).

When will retatrutide be available?

No source checked gives a date. Lilly says it plans to submit its US application in the first quarter of 2027, and the TGA's published timeframe for a new medicine application is 255 working days.

Will retatrutide be available in 2026?

No source checked says so. Lilly's first planned US submission falls in the first quarter of 2027, and the TGA stated on 14 September 2026 that retatrutide is still in clinical trials.

Is retatrutide available in Australia yet?

Retatrutide is not approved by the TGA, and the TGA says products accessed outside clinical trials could be counterfeit (TGA safety alert, 14 September 2026). Trial sites in Australia are listed on ClinicalTrials.gov, and a listing is not a supply route.

Is retatrutide on the WADA Prohibited List?

No. Sport Integrity Australia's retatrutide page states that retatrutide is not listed on the 2026 World Anti-Doping Code Prohibited List, and a search of the 2026 list for the name found no entry (both checked 14 October 2026). That check covers one named substance. It does not settle the status of any other product, and the List's class S0 for non-approved substances means a missing name does not establish permission in sport.

Does 'research use only' make retatrutide legal to sell in Australia?

No. The TGA states that a 'research use only' disclaimer does not make supply lawful and does not permit importation (TGA advisory, 13 April 2026).
