Is retatrutide available in the USA? What the public record says

Retatrutide is not an FDA-approved medicine in the USA. FDA and Lilly statements confirm this; checked 17 October 2026. Lilly's release of 29 September 2026 plans a US filing in the first quarter of 2027. This means asking for approval, not a date when approval will come. A trial listing does not mean a drug is approved for public sale.

Feeling hungry is familiar. News about hunger research can be harder to follow. Your feed may show a study result, a company statement and an approval claim. Each record has its own purpose. Our retatrutide evidence hub explains the wider science. Here, we look at what the US public record says.

These records do different jobs. A study asks a question, and a paper reports the findings. The body in charge of medicine approval makes that decision. Keeping these jobs apart makes a headline easier to judge.

Is retatrutide FDA approved?

No. The FDA says retatrutide is not part of an approved drug. This comes from its page about unapproved GLP-1 drugs; checked 17 October 2026. GLP-1 is a gut hormone, a chemical signal made in the gut. You may see its name in this research. FDA stands for US Food and Drug Administration. Its statement is about approval, not whether studies include this compound. A study headline and an approved medicine record mean different things. Lilly's September 2026 public information page also says retatrutide is still being tested.

Read the FDA's statement about unapproved drugs for its own wording. A US finding does not tell you about Australian approval. Our article Is retatrutide legal in Australia? covers that separate question.

Lilly press releases, 23 July and 29 September 2026; checked 17 October 2026

When does Lilly plan to apply for US approval?

Lilly plans to file in the first quarter of 2027. Its release of 29 September 2026 states this; checked 17 October 2026. The first quarter means January through March. Lilly calls the planned filing a Biologics License Application, or BLA. This asks the FDA to approve a biological product. Lilly gave the same target on 23 July 2026. Both statements describe a future filing. Neither says the FDA has approved this type of request. Neither says it has accepted a full filing or set an approval decision date.

The Lilly release of 29 September 2026 is a dated company statement. Read its filing target with that date in mind. The July release also covered work on data about making the product and its quality. Filing plans can change. The quarter is not a promised launch date.

Does a ClinicalTrials.gov listing mean retatrutide is approved?

No. A ClinicalTrials.gov listing is a study record, not a medicine approval. The US National Library of Medicine explains who sends in the details. Study sponsors and researchers do this. Its report covers work to update the site in 2019–2021. It says a listing alone does not mean the federal government has reviewed the study. The record makes research easier to find and check. That is useful, but deciding whether a medicine can be sold is a separate job. A study on a government website is not, on that basis, an approved treatment.

Trial status tells you where the study stands. Approval status tells you the decision of the body that rules on a product. How are people getting retatrutide? explains these kinds of records. It does not treat a study listing as a way to buy.

What does a published retatrutide trial show?

A published trial reports what happened in a set group under study conditions. Jastreboff and colleagues published a Phase 2 trial in 2023. Phase 2 is a stage of research in people. The paper appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine. The team compared groups of adults with obesity. They checked changes in body weight and safety. The paper names Eli Lilly as the funder. It also gives the trial's record number. These details let you find and check the study. The paper gives evidence to review. It is not an FDA approval decision.

The paper's short summary links it to NCT04881760 (Jastreboff et al., 2023). A paper date marks a step in research. It belongs in a study history. How long has retatrutide been studied? follows that history.

Evidence limits

What does the public record leave unknown about when retatrutide might be available?

The sources checked on 17 October 2026 give no US approval date or public launch date for retatrutide. Lilly's September 2026 information page says launch depends on trials and the approval process. The FDA explains that it reviews evidence and risks for the intended patient group. Each step has its own decision. A target date for filing cannot settle those choices in advance. A filing quarter is not a release quarter. Reading it that way would add a claim the sources do not make.

Price is a separate question. How much does retatrutide cost? Is there an approved price? checks those public records. This article from Form Laboratories explains the evidence found on its check date. It cannot predict an approval decision or a person's health outcome.

FAQ

Is retatrutide available as an approved US medicine?

No. The FDA statement and Lilly's public information page say it is unapproved; checked 17 October 2026. A study record does not change that finding.

Has Lilly announced when it will file for approval?

Yes. Lilly's releases of 23 July and 29 September 2026 give a planned US filing period. They name the first quarter of 2027. These statements were checked 17 October 2026.

Does the planned filing mean a 2027 launch is confirmed?

No. The Lilly statements reviewed on 17 October 2026 give a target for filing. That means sending in the papers. It does not confirm approval or when the public can get it.

Can a trial listing prove FDA approval?

No. The National Library of Medicine explains what a ClinicalTrials.gov listing means. A listing alone does not mean the federal government has reviewed the study. A study entry and a product approval do different jobs.
